A play on the current state of Therukoothu

It isn't so regularly you see Therukoothu taking place in the towns at the present time. The collection of artistes who carry out Therukoothu have come down vastly in the remaining 20-30 years. It is at this juncture, Akku, a Chennai based theatre workforce along with Coimbatore’s Udalveli organised a play (Adavu) on Therukoothu recently. The play used to be a couple of bunch of Therukoothu artistes performing the popular ‘Panjali Sabatham’ from the Mahabarata and how much treatement they get from the organisers and other people. CT stuck up with Vetri MV (founder of Akku, who directed the play) for a talk.
Adavu is the first from Akku, begins off Vetri “After forming the gang, the very first thing that came into our mind used to be Therukoothu, as a result of it is the conventional artwork of Tamil Nadu. We wanted to commit our first play to these artistes.” He says, including, “If you take a look at the current state of affairs, Therukoothu artistes are suffering without correct source of revenue. It isn't like different professions, where other people transfer jobs. Here, persons are so keen about the artwork they usually don’t wish to depart it. That is the primary reason I directed this play.”

Vetri says some of these songs in the play had been at the start written through Kalavai Krishnaswami years in the past. “However, we discovered those songs from Purisai Sambandha Kannappa Thambiran. He gave us the costumes and the whole setup. We have just changed it and added some dialogues to make the play relevant now,” he says.

Therukoothu is typically performed from 10pm to 6am. But, Vetri says that he's no longer certain what number of are aware of that such an artwork shape existed. “So, we would have liked to show the current era how Therukoothu looks like. We restricted the duration of the play to 50 mins since they received’t have the endurance to sit down thru whole night time and watch it. Out of 250 individuals who watched the play, a minimum of 10 would be interested about the idea that and they would move on the knowledge to others. We want to take a look at and revive the artwork,” he provides.

Ask him the reason at the back of including ‘Panjali Sabatham’ in the play, he says, “We wanted to create some interest in other people. It is likely one of the most well liked and tasty chapters in Mahabarata. We may upload humour and more drama to the narrative and even the youngsters who came to watch the play have loved it.”

Vetri provides that there's another reason why he determined to make a choice the plot. “It showcases how the society has been ill-treating girls. Women had been confused prior to now and it still continues. We just wanted to show how bad the society has been to ladies.”

Talking about cinema, he says that folks should give equal significance to cinema and conventional artwork forms. “The significance we give to theatre and Therukoothu is terribly less compared to cinema. If we predict digitalisation is the reason at the back of that, it may well’t be approved. Because, even in Bengaluru and Kerala things are digitalised, however they still give equal significance to theatre and cinema. But, it's not the case in Tamil Nadu. I still don’t know the reason at the back of it. The structure of Therukoothu can handiest be revived whether it is taken up through scholars and artwork golf equipment in every town. It needs to be integrated in faculties and faculties, and handiest then the following era will likely be all in favour of reviving the structure.”

However, Vetri is terribly satisfied in regards to the reaction he got for the play. He says that the reaction from the target market used to be overwhelming and it gave a large boost to the actors.
