AIIMS discharges Lalu, supporters turn violent

NEW DELHI: There was top drama at AIIMS on Monday over the discharge of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad, along with his supporters making a ruckus on the health facility alleging that he was being sent back as part of a conspiracy to kill him.

Lalu were referred to the institute from the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, on March 29 with top blood sugar and infection. Last week, the treating docs found him fit for discharge. Sources stated the RJD leader, serving jail time period in fodder scam cases, had sought time till Monday.

However, on Monday, when Lalu was being advised to prepare for discharge, he wrote to the AIIMS director that he was nonetheless unwell. "I want to apprise you that I suffer from center disease, kidney infection, sugar and many illnesses. I've back pain and repeated bouts of dizziness. I've even fallen in the toilet a number of occasions,” the RJD president wrote.

He also mentioned in his letter, which was tweeted through his son Tejashwi Yadav, that Ranchi's Birsa Munda jail (where he is lodged) and RIMS shouldn't have amenities to treat kidney-related illnesses and that AIIMS will have to not force him out under "political pressure”.



"If I'm sent to Ranchi Medical College from AIIMS and it endangers my life, you're going to be held accountable for that,” Lalu stated.

However, AIIMS maintained that he doesn't have any severe scientific situation. "He was referred from RIMS Ranchi with top blood sugar and infection. We constituted a board of senior faculty participants from departments of drugs, surgical operation, cardiology, endocrinology and nephrology for his care. He was placed on injectable antibiotics and then on oral antibiotics. His blood sugar was managed and analysis for cardiac and renal status was executed. He confirmed significant growth. He had no fever and his antibiotics had been stopped,” stated a health facility spokesperson.

The spokesperson stated that the scientific board met on April 28, reviewed his growth and determined that he was fit to be discharged. "However, because of his power drawback of hypertension, diabetes and backache, he was instructed to be on regular practice up and control at RIMS Ranchi,” he added.

The AIIMS' analysis didn't move down neatly with the previous Bihar chief minister's supporters. Sources stated eight to nine men barged into the institute's cath lab when AIIMS director, Dr Randeep Guleria, was taking a spherical.

They shouted at him and when the protection body of workers attempted to forestall them, Lalu's supporters created a ruckus. One security guard was injured in the process and the supporters broke the glass panel of the door of the AIIMS cath lab in the process, which induced the institute to document a police grievance.

"Around 12.15pm, Eight-10 unknown miscreants misbehaved with the AIIMS group of workers and created nuisance in the health facility area protesting in opposition to the discharge of Lalu Prasad, who has been under treatment at AIIMS and is being discharged lately. They also broken the glass door of the cath lab on the rear entrance, resulting in injury to AIIMS security guard, Khurshid Alam. With the intervention of security group of workers, the protection of AIIMS group of workers was ensured and crowd dispersed,” AIIMS deputy chief security officer Deepak Kumar wrote in the police grievance.

But the ruckus persevered and Lalu left from AIIMS, along side dozens of supporters, around 3.25pm for the New Delhi railway station to catch a educate for Ranchi.


Earlier in the day, Congress president Rahul Gandhi met the RJD chief on the institute and enquired about his health.


"Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the CBI are conspiring to kill our leader. They harassed AIIMS to discharge him in opposition to his needs,” a Lalu supporter shouted.


The former Bihar chief minister has been convicted in 4 fodder scam cases since 2013, the latest being the Dumka treasury case, wherein a unique CBI courtroom sentenced him to 14 years in jail.
