SURAT: About 400 farmers from other villages in Surat district boycotted the public hearing organised via the district collector regarding the acquisition of land for the bullet educate project after about 12 to 15 farmer leaders were detained via the police forward of the meeting on Monday.
Sources mentioned that the district collector had organised public hearing for the land acquisition via the state government for the bullet educate project within the district on Monday. The hearing used to be organised at the Gandhi Smruti bhavan under the chairmanship of district collector Dr Dhaval Patel.
Farmers from other villages in Olpaad taluka, Kamrej taluka, Palasana taluka and Choriyasi had collected at Gandhi Smruti Bhavan under the aegis of the Gujarat Khedut Samaj (GKS) to oppose the bullet educate project and demanding four times worth for the farmers’ land to be obtained for the project via the state government on Monday.
Sources mentioned that ahead of the meeting may start, the city police detained farmers’ leaders including member of Surat district panchayat, Darshan Nayak, president of GKS, Jayesh Patel and different farmer leaders including Ramesh Patel, Anant Patel, Jashwant Patel and many others. About 12 farmer leaders were detained via the Athwalines police from the Gandhi Smruti Bhavan at about 3 pm.
Talking to TOI, member of Surat district panchayat Darshan Nayak mentioned, “We had won reliable invitation from the district collector to wait the public hearing at the bullet educate project. Hence, about 400 farmers from more than a few villages in Surat district had collected at Gandhi Smruti Bhavan. Before the meeting may start, the police detained us. The farmers was angry they usually boycotted the public hearing”
Talking to TOI, district collector Dr Dhaval Patel mentioned, “The farmer leaders were arrested because of the law and order issue. However, the public hearing used to be performed and we also attempted to reply to the problems raised via the farmers. There might be no rescheduling of the public hearing on bullet educate project."
