Colaba residents fume as BMC leaves road dug up

MUMBAI: For two months, the BMC left a street dug up in Colaba underneath the pretext of sporting out stormwater drains (SWD) paintings and then botched it up further by means of laying paver blocks, declare residents.
On Tuesday, when TOI visited JA Allana Marg, the SWD pipeline paintings had been completed and paver blocks were being laid. Locals mentioned upkeep were shifting at a snail’s tempo, inflicting inconvenience.

Subhash Motwani, president of Clean Heritage Colaba Residents Association (CHCRA) mentioned, “The BMC had made up our minds to get rid of paver blocks on all municipal roads. However, right here we are seeing that once laying the pipeline, paver blocks are being put over it. The blocks were so badly positioned that they are going to for sure come off inside of no time.”

Another resident Pervez Cooper mentioned that the SWD pipeline paintings has resulted in rubble being dumped on the adjoining footpath. “At the close by Colaba Causeway footpath, hawkers have taken over the footpath, but right here, civic works have made it inconceivable for pedestrians to stroll,” he mentioned.

Residents claimed the SWD paintings began in March but BMC officers mentioned they began paintings simplest in April. SWD assistant engineer Chandrakant Godbole mentioned a 600mm pipeline is being laid at a value of Rs 65 lakh and the paintings needs a month’s time. “We must finish the paintings in two days. The street was once laid with paver blocks ahead of it was once dug up, so we made up our minds to reinstate it with the similar,” he mentioned.

The voters woes, however, don't seem to end with this. The BMC has proposed development of the stretch and plans to absorb upkeep of the paver-blocked street quickly after monsoon. Local Shiv Sena corporator Sujata Sanap mentioned, “We plan to toughen the street but now, there may be very little time to do this. Hence, we made up our minds to lay paver blocks now and start paintings after rains.”

Residents mentioned that had the BMC deliberate the SWD paintings well prematurely, the street can have been paved with asphalt ahead of monsoon. “These paver blocks are inconvenient. The BMC must have relaid the street at the moment as a substitute of again digging it up after monsoon,” added Motwani.

A senior citizen, Nina Malkani, mentioned the situation of Oliver Road in Colaba may be the similar. “The civic authorities have dug up the street since months now. We are getting in poor health because of the flying mud and are compelled to stay our home windows shut,” mentioned Malkani
