Fewer Mumbai local trains on heavy rain days

MUMBAI: Fewer services and products and water-resistant locomotives: that’s Central Railway’s plan to overcome waterlogging on tracks this monsoon.
For the first time, CR has determined to put into effect a ‘Sunday time-table’ on high-tide days that may see heavy rains. A ‘Sunday time-table’ approach as an alternative of the overall supplement of one,732 services and products, CR will operate 1,384. The move goals to reduce the number of trains that might be uncovered to the vagaries of climate and thus run the chance of being marooned on waterlogged tracks.

Also on playing cards is revamping locomotives to lead them to ‘water-resistant’, said CR divisional railway supervisor S K Jain. These locomotives might be 12-14 inch water-resistant and hence, move along flooded tracks.

A section of commuters are, on the other hand, frightened that lowering services and products may lead to crowding at stations. Last yr’s August 29 downpour left 35 rakes marooned on tracks along Main and Harbour lines, leaving commuters stranded for hours. It took more than 12 hours for diesel locomotives to remove these rakes from tracks and just about five days for all services and products to be restored.

“We plan to adopt the Sunday timetable in the greater interest of commuters. This will make sure that some trains are in reserve in order that if a scenario of rakes being marooned arises, CR can jump again to normalcy at the earliest,” Jain said.

“The rakes in reserve can be utilized the next day to come. Also, the changed locomotives can be utilized to tug out marooned rakes,” he stated.

The plan might be implemented in levels, in affiliation with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). “We will check out the plan on a pilot basis on first 3 high-tide days. If it does now not work, we can name it off,” he added.

But what occurs if the IMD forecast is incorrect and there is not any heavy rain at the high tide day. “CR will right away repair normal services and products and run the standard 1,732 services and products at the suburban corridor. Our purpose is not to inconvenience commuters,” Jain clarified.

“We will work in line with the advisory issued by way of the BMC for voters, by which the civic body appeals to public to not step out of the house except there's an emergency,” he said.

A senior railway reliable said, “We will announce upfront about such days. It might be just like we announce the mega blocks.”
