BENGALURU: The transfer of colleges introducing different cut-off marks for girls and boys seeking admission to Pre-University (PU) courses has not long past down well with several scholars and oldsters. Fixing a higher cut-off puts women at an obstacle, they argue.
At least 3 top co-education faculties that TOI spoke with, then again, justified the practice while confirming the trend is in all 3 streams (science, commerce and arts). For example, ICSE board scholars making use of for a commerce path at Christ College have 92.17% cut-off for ladies versus 85.33% for boys.
“I were given 75% in ICSE examination and need to study arts in pre-university. I rushed to apply at Christ but I’m ineligible because the cut-off is 78% to study arts with mixture of history, economics, social science and political science. For boys, it is 73.67%. I’m now seeking to get admission at St Joseph’s Arts and Science College,” stated a dyslexic pupil.
Christ PU College most important Fr Sebastian Mathai, then again, stated different cut-offs are in position only to ensure that there are equivalent number of girls and boys in any elegance.
“We’re following the federal government instruction to enrol equivalent number of girls and boys in a class in each and every circulate. Since women have been acting higher than the boys, the similar cut-off would imply that every elegance may have extra women. Separate cut-off list is to ensure that 50% of them are boys in all classes (matter combination-wise),” he stated.
Jain College in VV Puram, which received 13,000 packages for admission to PU courses, stated eight,000 of these were from women. The cut-off for boys in science is 88% in comparison to 89% for ladies. BT Venkatesh, director of Jan College, stated: “The number of packages from women is higher. Hence, now we have different cut-offs for girls and boys, so that you can be fair and feature equivalent number of boys too.”
St Joseph’s College of Commerce, has a different problem—extra number of boys making use of than women.
“The cut-off for boys is 85% and 90% for ladies. We don't apply this strictly as a result of now we have extra packages from boys who are studying in affiliated schools within the St Joseph’s institutions. It compels us to offer extra desire to girls as a result of they're scoring good marks,” Fr Prashanth Madtha, director of the establishment, stated.
He stated there are extra exclusive faculties for ladies than boys, which gives women extra opportunities. However, St Joseph’s College (Arts and Science) claimed that it has not set differential cut-offs.
