CHENNAI: The police on Friday arrested a man in Mannady for threatening a city-based jeweller to offer him Rs 25 lakh as protection cash. The police laid a lure for the suspect, who used to be holed up at a space two kilometres clear of the businessman’s store.
The arrested used to be identified as R Seenu alias Srinivasan, 45, a resident of Acharappan Street. Srinivasan may be a jeweller and used to be known to the complainant Giri Radhakrishnan, 52, a resident of Sowcarpet.

Preliminary inquiries published that Srinivasan had incurred a huge loss in his business and needed to close store a couple of months ago. He tried to get loans from other people he knew to reopen his store but the effort bore no fruit. He then made up our minds to threaten Radhakrishnan into giving him cash.

Srinivasan picked Radhakrishnan as a goal as he knew that the 52-year-old not too long ago made some transactions and saved some liquid money with him. The police said Srinivasan made his first call to Radhakrishnan at 9am on May three. He coated his phone with a handkerchief to hide his voice.


Radhakrishnan lodged a complaint on the Elephant Gate police station announcing he had received a choice from an unknown quantity and the caller demanded he pay Rs 25 lakh to steer clear of informing the Income Tax and other businesses about malpractice reported in Radhakrishnan’s showroom. The caller additionally threatened to kidnap his son, if he failed to reply.


As per police directions, Radhakrishnan tried to call the man’s cellular nevertheless it used to be switched off. So, the police requested him to send the caller a text message asking the man to call him again so Radhakrishnan may at hand over a portion of cash as an advance. Radhakrishnan used to be to mention within the message that he would give the steadiness amount in instalments. Following this, Srinivasan known as again announcing he would verify the site for the exchange and quickly disconnected the call. The police traced his location and narrowed down on Srinivasan.
