Para-athlete in need of cycle for Special Olympics

GUWAHATI: National record-holder para-cyclist Abhishek Gogoi is facing a struggle in raising funds to shop for a bicycle and different essential apparatus for the Special Olympics World Summer Games, which might be held in March 2019 in Abu Dhabi. The 17-year-old had qualified for the Special Olympics the use of borrowed cycles earlier this year.
At the Cycling NCC-cum-national championship, which was held at Jharkhand in January 2018, Abhishek got the first place in each the Five-kilometre time trial and 10-kilometre time trial events. His 10-km timing of 19 minutes and 21 seconds, which is the 12th quickest on the earth within the Special Olympics class, earned him a place on the 2019 Games.

Born with cerebral palsy, Abhishek misplaced his father to most cancers a few years ago. He recently practises on borrowed cycles and has also taken section in primary competitions the use of such borrowed cycles.

Arshel Akhter, an avid bicycle owner based in Guwahati, has began an online marketing campaign through ketto.org to collect a sum of Rs 1.Five lakh to shop for a cycle and different essential pieces for Abhishek's participation within the Special Olympics.

"Abhishek is a wonderful kid with lot of potential to do well in sports. But unfortunately, his family's financial condition is not good enough to afford all the necessary equipment. Now if we can gather some money, it will be helpful for him. We can buy a good cycle for him before he goes to attend the national training camp in Rajasthan from June 19 for the Special Olympics," Arshel advised TOI on Tuesday.


The marketing campaign, which has received some enhance from donors already, was began on May 13 and will cross on until May 27.


Abhishek's mother, Bornali Nath Gogoi, stated she is the sole bread earner within the circle of relatives and does not have the assets to fund his dream with what's left after offering for him and his younger sister. "Since childhood, he liked to ride bicycles. He has hurt himself by falling off cycles many times. And that is how he learnt. If we get some support, my son's dream can be fulfilled," stated his mother.


Abhishek, who also plays cricket besides biking, stated he's going to take a look at his best to convey an Olympic medal if he is given a cycle.
