Mangaluru: Congress chief Shakunthala T Shetty, who lost against BJP candidate Sanjeeva Matandooru in Puttur, announced that she is not going to contest elections someday.
Shakunthala, who was once one of the Parliamentary secretaries of former chief minister Siddaramaiah, said she is going to focus on development the birthday celebration in Puttur. She was once elected on a BJP price tag in 2004 and re-elected on a Congress price tag in 2013. However, BJP candidate Matandooru has defeated Shakunthala with a margin of 19,477 votes within the recently-concluded election. While Shakunthala bagged 70,596 votes, her rival secured 90,073 votes.
Shakunthala informed TOI that a malicious marketing campaign against her via the BJP ended in her failure within the constituency. “I were given the chance to grow to be an MLA two times and served truthfully. This time, I lost because of many causes. First of all, the Hindutva wave that the BJP created has affected my prospects. The Sangh Parivar, particularly the RSS, has been running on the grassroots degree to verify the victory of the BJP within the title of Hindutva. A malicious marketing campaign against the Congress and chief minister Siddaramaiah introduced via the BJP has helped their candidate to win the election. They were spreading lies that Siddaramaiah is anti-Hindu,” she alleged, including that no non-public assaults happened against her within the constituency, right through the campaigns.
The former MLA also cast aspersions on the functioning of EVMs. “I've suspicions in regards to the functioning of EVMs. I would have accredited the defeat with none suspicion if the margin was once between 5,000–10,000 votes. Such an enormous margin of above 19,000 itself results in suspicion. We have already filed a criticism with the Election Commission,” she said.
On her long run plans, Shakunthala said, “I've made up our minds to not contest elections someday. I can enhance birthday celebration staff, who are unsatisfied over my defeat. I can instil self assurance in them and work against strengthening the birthday celebration.”
