DEHRADUN: Social media was once all praise for the action of a Uttarakhand cop after a video purportedly showed him saving a Muslim youth from a mob after the latter was once allegedly present in a compromising position with a Hindu girl at a temple close to Ramnagar in Nainital district.
ADG (regulation and order) Ashok Kumar said the incident happened on Tuesday when a Muslim youth went to satisfy his girlfriend, a Hindu, at Garjia Devi temple about 15 km from Ramnagar.
Locals come what may got here to learn about it and reached the temple to "teach the duo a lesson", he said.
On being informed a couple of trouble within the area, Sub-Inspector Gagandeep Singh rushed to the spot the place he found a mob preparing to attack the couple alleging that they had been present in a compromising position.
He in an instant rushed to their rescue drawing the Muslim youth close to him to act as a shield to him, and within the procedure taking a number of blows from the mob on himself, the ADG said, adding the mob was once dispersed and the couple was once taken to a police station from the place they were sent back to their households.
Five people whose faces are visible within the clip have been booked and a search is directly to nab them. A reward of Rs 2,500 has been introduced for Gagandeep Singh for his act of bravery, he said.
Singh's "courage" was once hailed by the IPS Association as well.
"We salute the courage, compassion and presence of mind of our young colleague from Uttarakhand Police in saving a man from a lynch mob. SI Gagandeep Singh exemplifies the values that should guide every police officer," IPS Association said in a tweet.
Social media was once buzzing with praise for the "brave" police officer.
"Cop Gagandeep Singh is a hero," a Twitter person wrote as he tweeted a picture of Singh protecting the boy from the mob.
"He did justice to both his uniform and turban. Remarkable," wrote another person.
"A real rock star," social media was once replete with messages of praise for the officer hero.
