28 groups protest against citizenship bill in Assam

DIBRUGARH: The simmering discontent against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 once once more got here to the fore on Thursday as over 10000 activists from 28 organisations staged a mass protest at the old high school box in Dibrugarh in protest against the arguable invoice.

Several distinguished organisations, including the Asom Sahitya Sabha, All Assam Karmachari Parishad, Chamber of Commerce, various early life and students' teams, womens' forums, school and college students, senior citizens and contributors of civil society participated within the protest which used to be organised via the All Assam Students' Union (Aasu).

Participating within the rally, Aasu Dibrugarh district normal secretary Sankar Jyoti Baruah warned the government of a statewide agitation involving every phase of society if the government fails to scrap the highly arguable invoice.

"The Centre should specifically adhere to the clauses of the the Assam Accord signed in 1985. Anyone who has entered Assam after March 24, 1971 should be treated as an illegal migrant irrespective of one's religious affiliation. There should be no tinkering with the Assam Accord. The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 should be scrapped since it is a threat to the culture, language and identity of Assamese people," Baruah said.
