Mumbai: From Monday, 250 inspectors appointed by means of the BMC to enforce the plastic ban will fan out across the town to discuss with shops, restaurants and other business institutions and penalize the ones found in possession of banned items.
The BMC leader held a meeting with senior civic officials on Thursday to talk about the nitty-gritties of the ban and steered them to focus on shopkeepers, department shops and business institutions in top footfall areas throughout the initial days. The BMC has issued a listing of places these inspectors can discuss with to penalize offenders (see box).
The civic frame is gearing up for the ban with a three-day exhibition from Friday.
A complete of 61 corporations and 50 women’s self-help groups will display alternatives to plastic merchandise. All 250 inspectors will take part on this exhibition.
The exhibition can be inaugurated at the National Sports Club of India in Worli in the presence of actors Ajay Devgan and Kajol, leader minister Devendra Fadnavis’ spouse Amruta Fadnavis, Shiv Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray, surroundings minister Ramdas Kadam and other leaders and civic officials.
The BMC plans to arrange a panel dialogue at the exhibition to gauge senior politicians’ opinion on sure sorts of plastics for which alternatives aren't to be had. The government may believe with the exception of a few items similar to garbage bin liners from the ban.
The BMC has conducted a workshop for its 250 inspectors. They can be provided with uniforms and every can be assigned specific areas and received’t be allowed to discuss with others’. They must show their identity playing cards to these they intend to penalize. The BMC has put up record of the inspectors on its web site together with the areas allotted to them.
Kiran Dighavkar, assistant civic commissioner, said, “Our goal is to educate other folks by means of penalizing them for violating the regulation, no longer terrorize them.”
