HONG KONG: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday lambasted "protectionism, isolationism and populism" and again vowed to open up Asia's largest financial system, as Beijing faces an escalating industry dispute with the United States.

Xi instructed a gathering of foreign industry executives that after "signs of stability and improvement in the world economy" closing 12 months, "we must also stay vigilant because ... we have seen a surge of trade protectionism, isolationism and populism".

The leaders of mining massive BHP Billiton, German carmaker Volkswagen and British conglomerate Swire had been seen on the meeting in keeping with pictures from Chinese state television.
