Commuters struggle as stress on Mysuru-Madikeri road increases

MYSURU: The closure of Shiradi Ghat Road, owing to ongoing restore work, coupled with the ban on heavy cars on Charmadi Ghat Road owing to repeated landslides, has increased drive on the Bengaluru-Mysuru-Madikeri Road, which has turned into a de facto lifeline between the 3 cities. Traffic jams have develop into a not unusual prevalence on this hilly street, in particular in the night, when heavy cars get started working.
Commuters are none too proud of the placement, since it is now taking them six to seven hours to reach Sampaje in Madikeri from Mysuru - a journey that differently lasted three-and-a-half hours. Buses that departed from Mysuru at 11pm on Friday night reached Sampaje handiest at 6am on Saturday.

Subramanya Rao, a driving force with a personal bus operator, said that even experienced drivers discovered using on the Mysuru-Madikeri-Puttur Road a challenging experience at night. "Owing to rain and mist, the visibility is poor. Adding to which, the road is poorly maintained, and the bushes and branches on either side of the road have not been trimmed. Lack of reflective sign boards means that drivers have to be extra cautious while travelling," said Rao.

He also complained about the deficient state of the stretch between Kushalnagar and Madikeri. "There is no scope for overtaking another vehicle. In many places, the road is reduced to a single lane. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has failed to take necessary precautions," Rao added.

Sampaje resident Mahesh Kumar agreed that visibility on the street was deficient, leading to accidents in various places. "Heavy vehicles operate on the road at night, and drivers struggle because of the rain, and other problems. In most places, vehicles are moving at a snail's pace," said Kumar.

Madikeri superintendent of police Rajendra Kumar advised STOI that he was aware of the issue. "I travelled from Kushalnagar to Madikeri on Friday night. It is impossible to drive at a decent speed on the road. Vehicles were moving very slowly on both sides of the road at night. A lot needs to be done to improve the condition of the road, including trimming of the bushes, etc," Kumar said.

Meanwhile, on Charmadi Ghat Road, ban on motion of heavy cars was prolonged on Saturday, forcing drivers to use the Madikeri Road to reach Bengaluru. "NHAI should have started repair work on Shiradi Ghat Road well in advance. This is not a new situation, and they should have prepared for it," said Vasant Kumar, a truck driving force from Puttur.
