Cops use water cannons on protesting teachers

PANCHKULA: Several computer academics and lab assistants were injured in Panchkula on Tuesday when police attempted to forestall them from getting into Shiksha Sadan construction in Sector 5. The law enforcement officials used water cannons on as many as 200 protesters, who had plans to go into the schooling department construction seeking fulfilment in their demands.

The protesters, who wanted to gherao Shiksha Sadan in Panchkula to press their call for of regularisation in their jobs, gathered at dharna ground in Sector 5 right here. They attempted to gherao Shiksha ,Sadan but failed after the police was once pressed into action.

The move has come after the contract of many computer academics and lab assistants ended on May 31.

"The Haryana government had assured us that it would raise our salary and provide us facilities in line with the regular staff but so far nothing has been done. We have scheduled a meeting with principal secretary to the Haryana chief minister, following which the next course of action would be decided," said Suresh Nain, vice-president of the Haryana State Teachers Association.


On June eight, two academics were injured right through a protest. Earlier on May 28, over 30 academics had sustained injuries whilst agitating. The protesters alleged that during December final 12 months, Haryana leader minister Manohar Lal Khattar had agreed to simply accept their demands regarding wage hike and activity security. "Nothing has been done yet," they said.


In 24 days, that is the sixth time that the police have been forced to use water cannons on protesters.
