Dishes to go off menu this Jamai Shasthi

KOLKATA: Schoolteacher Somenath Mitra and his wife Suparna had planned to have at least 4 other dishes of fish apart from their sonin-law’s favorite chicken mughlai curry and dhokar dalna as Tuesday evening’s menu for Jamai Shasthi. However, a spherical at two local markets on Monday morning made them right away strike a few dishes off the menu.

“The costs are exorbitantly top. A decent measurement hilsa is being bought at over Rs 1,800 and beckti is going at Rs 800 according to kg. Earlier, I might have gone for mutton. But owing to the carcass meat scare, we have stopped eating mutton. Even the cost of chicken has risen via greater than 50% compared to closing week. With costs so top, it is unattainable to manage too many dishes at one move this 12 months for any average Bengali middle-class family,” stated Mitra, a resident of Chetla who teaches at a Behala college.

The annual ritual of treating sons-in-law at the occasion of Jamai Shasthi with a plethora dishes is set to burn a hollow within the pockets of many middle-class households this Tuesday. Owing to the ongoing truck strike, emerging gas costs and the demand-andsupply dynamics, fish costs are hovering in Kolkata, a day prior to Jamai Sasthi, forcing many Kolkatans to make lastminute adjustments to their menus.

As has been the custom, hilsa stays the most popular fish for the occasion with delicacies such as ilish bhapa, ilish paturi, pabda sorshe and chingri malaikari being one of the should have parts of the Jamai Shasthi platter. And the sudden surge in demand for the fish (with many Kolkatans still refusing to devour meat) has compelled a sudden upward thrust in costs within the fish market.

While hilsa is being bought at Rs 1,000-1,800 according to kg, pabda and katla are to be had for anything between Rs 800 and Rs 1,000. Beckti is being bought at Rs 800 according to kg and bagda chingriis priced as top as Rs 1,000-1,200. Regular fishes like rohu has also soared as much as Rs 450 according to kg and fishes like tangraand parsheare being bought at Rs 500 according to kg at markets like Gariahat, Lake Market and Manicktala bazaars.

“I had come to buy at least three other fishes — hilsa, pabda and chingri. But the costs are so top that I had to drop Pabda from the record,” stated Amlan Banerjee, a resident of Sarat Banerjee Road.

“The price of fish is so top that we have decided to skip cooking at house for Tuesday evening. I might quite spend the quantity at a restaurant while eating out with circle of relatives that takes the load of cooking the dishes after purchasing the raw fabrics at the sort of top price, especially on a day when even my maid is on leave for the same occasion,” stated Sanchita Sengupta, who plans to take out her son-inlaw, daughter and six-monthold granddaughter for dineout at a restaurant in Acropolis Mall.

Price of chicken, which had hit a document low after the in poor health chicken and carcass meat fiasco within the closing two months, has also discovered steam at the occasion. It is being bought for anything between Rs 170 and Rs 190 according to kg.

The same goes for the cost of greens that has witnessed a 10%-20% upward thrust. Vegetables like green jackfruit (enchor) are being bought at anything between Rs 40 and Rs 50. Vegetables like pointed gourd (potol), okra (bhindi) and ridged gourd (jhinge) are priced at Rs 40, a Rs 5-Rs 10 increase from closing week’s price.
