BHUBANESWAR/KOLKATA: A police staff from Baruipur and Bhubaneswar on Thursday arrested CPI-ML (Red Star) leader Alik Chakrabarty, who was the face of the anti-power grid motion at Machhibhanga in Bhangar, from a non-public medical institution in Bhubaneshwar. Chakrabarty, police claimed, was charged beneath Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Explosives Act, except different fees, like murder and arson.

Bhubaneshwar police commissioner Y B Khurania said Chakrabarty was sought after in over 70 instances, including murder in Bengal. “We had been informed about his motion by the Bengal police. Pradip Sigh Thakur, some other CPI-ML (Red Star) leader, demanded his treatment in police custody. “The police arrested him beneath false fees when he went to see a health care provider,” Thakur said in a press observation. Senior CPM leader Shamik Lahiri also condemned the arrest. The development coincided with Calcutta HC on Thursday granting bail to 3 individuals arrested for violence all the way through the Bhangar panchayat polls. Among them, Sankar Das is a CPIML (Red Star) member and Amitabha Bhattacharya a Mazdoor Kranti Parishad member.
