MANGALURU: The apprehensive Dakshina Kannada district administration on Friday declared a two-day vacation for colleges and PU faculties after the district won heavy downpour late on Thursday evening from 11.30pm onwards. The sudden May 29 deluge in Mangaluru city has saved the district administration on ft to fight any eventuality happening because of rains and as a precautionary measure, the holiday was declared considering the heavy rainfall in taluks of the district.

The downpour was such that Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) despatched 222 heavy rainfall indicators within the 5 taluks of the district – Belthangady, Sullia, Puttur, Bantwal and Mangaluru. The district recorded 120.6 mm of rainfall within the remaining 24 hours from eight.30am of Thursday. Mangaluru Taluk won the easiest rainfall of 144.6 mm, with Belthangady taluk receiving the least at 84mm of rainfall. Bantwal, Sullia and Puttur taluks won 129mm, 124 and 121mm of rainfall respectively indicating the level of downpour remaining evening until Friday morning. Last yr, the district had won simply four.4mm of rainfall at the same day. The district receives 941 mm of rainfall as normal average until June end and this yr, the rainfall has been 159mm within the first eight days of the month. Last yr it was 98mm of rainfall until June eight.
