Karnataka: Former Cong MLA to approach HC against EVM

MANGALURU: Former MLA of Mangaluru City South J R Lobo, who was defeated by way of his rival BJP candidate Vedavyas Kamath, is all set to approach the top courtroom searching for explanation regarding his suspicion over EVM and VVPAT.

The former MLA from Congress will likely be shifting his petition before the top courtroom inside a week. The Petition will likely be filed via N Ravindranath Kamath, advocate, top courtroom. Lobo’s primary competition is that the Election Commission will have to go back to poll papers as a substitute of the use of EVMs.


Addressing newshounds, Lobo said the election lead to Dakshina Kannada district was utterly sudden. "I have suspicion over the functioning EVMs. I don’t how efficient EVMs are, but voices are being raised against the use of machines for elections. People demand ballot papers instead of EVMs. I personally have suspicion over the number of votes polled in favour of me. Our party workers at booth levels too have expressed their apprehension over my defeat. Hence, I have decided to seek court’s intervention and I will also plead that the elections be held in ballot papers in future," Lobo said.

Through the petition, he'll search courtroom’s path to Election Commission for the recounting of votes from all EVMs in addition to the slips accrued in the VVPAT boxes.


"I had raised objections on May 15 soon after the results were declared. However, officials have opened one out of 238 VVPAT boxes. They have picked one VVPAT box on a random basis. I will seek the court’s direction to open all the 238 VVPATs and tally the polled votes with that of EVMs," Lobo said.

Lobo, the first time MLA from Congress had misplaced in opposition to BJP candidate D Vedavyas Kamath for a margin of 16,075 votes. While Kamath bagged 86,545 votes, Lobo may bag 70,470 votes. In Dakshina Kannada, Congress has misplaced in seven out of eight constituencies. In 2013, Congress had gained in seven out of eight constituencies. While Congress are alleging manipulation of EVMs and the use of Hindutva in election as reason for the shift, BJP leaders attribute the victory to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visions.
