Monu's extended family celebrates Eid together

MANGALURU: It used to be indeed a different Eid-ul-Fitr for educationist and Dakshina Kannada district wakf committee president U Kanachur Monu and his circle of relatives in Derlakatte. For years, Monu hadn't celebrated the this festival with his circle of relatives as he'd spend the holy month of Ramadan in the holy city of Makkah. This year, he selected to stay at home.
At least 30 contributors of his circle of relatives, including four children and grandchildren, accumulated at Monu's space on Friday. Monu said, "I'm happy this month has gone by with no untoward incidents in coastal Karnataka. I wish to see this in the future too, with all communities living in peace and harmony."

His space used to be abuzz with visitors and well-wishers coming over to greet Monu, who could also be a Congress chief and chairman of Kanachur Institute of Medical Sciences. Visitors have been handled to kheer, native savouries, sweets and particular Arabic coffee. "I don't remember when I last spent Eid with family and friends. I'm happy to be home," said Monu.

His son Abdul Rahiman explained that Arabic coffee may be very in style in Gulf countries. It's usually served with dates to counter its bitterness.

Monu said the circle of relatives prays on the native mosque. After returning home, his spouse Zohara, whom he fondly refers to as the 'finance minister of the house', passed over present money (Eidi) to children. Monu recalled that on Eid day in 1993, his spouse's mother stepped out for particular prayers, suffered a brain haemorrhage and passed away. "On this day, a ritual is held in remembrance of her and the two families come together and pray for her soul," he said.


The circle of relatives contains elder daughter Umaya Banu, her husband Arif Taslim and their children (Aaqid, Asad and Zara); son Abdul Rahiman, his spouse Sahada Maved and their children (Haya, Maryam and Hamdaan); daughter Fareeda, her husband Naseer Abdullah and their children (Nashat, Anam and Isa) and youngest daughter Dr Abida, her husband Dr Hashim Azeez and their two children (Ayra and Abaan). Some relatives and circle of relatives friends additionally stay with them.


Big lunch


The menu incorporated mutton biryani, rooster tikka masala, parathas, array of Iranian salads (fa ttoush, tabouli and Hummus. The lunch ended with truffles like rose falooda and mousse.
