Report holds 'heavy wind' responsible for Chilika boat tragedy

BHUBANESWAR: The preliminary investigation record submitted by means of the Directorate of Ports and Inland Water Transport in Chilika Boat tragedy has ruled out the technical system defects and held the ‘heavy wind’ liable for the capsizing of the boat within the lake on June 16 killing six persons.

The probe record was submitted to the state government on Friday. “We were given the record these days. Prima facie apparently that the boat was capsized due to unexpected heavy wind within the Chilika Lake. It’s now not a case of overloading or technical failure,” said G Srinivas, trade and delivery secretary.

Commerce and delivery minister Nrusingha Charan Sahu had asked director of Port and Inland Water Transport Subrat Rout on June 18 to probe the incident and submit an in depth report to the federal government.

Srinivas said the state government had equipped ok life jackets and lifebuoys to the owner of the ill-fated boat. But the boat-owner had now not used the apparatus on the day, he added.

He said the Khurda district administration had given 20 life jackets to the owner of the actual boat against the seating capability of 15 persons. “We are examining the findings and suggestions of the record in order that we will be able to take corrective measures to prevent such mishaps in long run,” he added.

The secretary said the dep. is making plans to impose advantageous on the boatmen for now not using the lifesaving apparatus. “We will chalk out a plan to sensitize both the passengers and boatmen to use lifesaving apparatus prior to beginning their boat adventure,” he added.

Four children and two women had drowned within the Chilika Lake on June 16 after the rustic boat they have been travelling in were given capsized in the course of the lake. They have been coming back from Kalijai temple inside the lake after Raja celebrations.
