Skateboarders take Bengaluru streets by storm

BENGALURU: Zipping on their skateboards and making their manner seamlessly through crowded streets, nearly 30 skateboarding enthusiasts affiliated to the Holystoked Collective rode through M G Road and Brigade Road on Thursday.
The riders were observing International Go Skateboarding Day (June 21). The city, which is considered the skateboarding capital of the rustic, boasts of the first-ever loose skatepark in India, set up via Holystoked and other collaborators from other places.

What started as a zeal for Poornabodh, Somanna MR, Abhishek and Amit Subba in 2011 has became a hub for both skilled and amateur skateboarders. From website hosting competitions and providing courses to promoting skateboards and equipment, Holystoked in Hegdenagar can be thought to be the epicentre of the skateboarding scene in Bengaluru.

Somanna mentioned there are three skateparks within the city, all built via Holystoked, of which just one, The Cave in Hegdenagar, is open to everyone.“We supply courses at places like Cubbon Park and Decathlon, where there is area to teach correctly, and at our skatepark. Over the years, it’s been thrilling to see increasingly more other folks from other backgrounds express an hobby in skateboarding. The youngest within the elegance is a three-and-a-half-year outdated,” he mentioned.

Attracting skateboarders from other portions of the rustic by the use of social media, the 30 enthusiasts first warmed up at The Cave and then moved on to MG Road. Turning heads as they cruised down the thoroughfare, the group was even presented loose ice-cream via a shop owner.


According to Somanna, potholes and the undulating floor of pavements aren't deterrents, but if truth be told allow them to treat it as an obstacle route. “As skateboarders, we take the surroundings in our stride. Be it a bench at the sidewalk or a pothole at the highway, all are stumbling blocks for us to jump over and skate round. Obviously excellent infrastructure would be superb but slight inclines and adjustments within the track are thrilling,” he mentioned.


‘Not aping the West’


Poornabodh mentioned the putting in place of Holystoked has helped all the sub-culture of skateboarding to adapt, without any overt promotion.“We aren't blindly aping Western tradition. We left a hit careers at the back of to check the scope of skateboarding within the country. We were instructed we were incorrect but now we know skateboarding can truly take off in India,” he mentioned.
