SP in Assam gets 2-year jail for torture

GUWAHATI: A district sessions courtroom in Guwahati on Thursday sentenced Goalpara SP Amitav Sinha to two years' imprisonment and imposed a high quality of Rs 50,000 after it discovered him to blame of torturing a murder accused in custody 5 years in the past. The courtroom discovered Sinha to blame under IPC Section 330 (voluntarily causing harm to extort confession).

Immediately after the decision, Sinha acquired bail. His suggest, Angshuman Bora, advised TOI , "We have got bail for four weeks to appeal in the high court. There is no material evidence against us. Our stand is that Amitav Sinha had only interrogated the murder accused, who was a charge-sheeted professional killer. He had lodged a complaint that he was tortured in police custody."


The Guwahati top courtroom has been tracking the case within the district sessions courtroom as the incident had caused an outrage within the town.


The murder accused, Gurmeet Singh, in his petition prior to the courtroom, stated he was once subjected to torture and was once beaten with a hockey stick that caused a fracture in his upper arm. He also alleged that the police poured petrol into his rectum whilst he was once in custody from June 17-18, 2013.


When the incident came about, Sinha was once additional SP (crime department) posted in Guwahati. He had long past to interrogate Gurmeet, who was once arrested from J&K in reference to the murder of a Guwahati-based businessman, Ajit Singh, in 2012.
