This school pays each student 1,000 to save itself

MANGALURU: Parents pay hefty charges to get their wards trained in private faculties, but a government lower number one faculty in a village of Udupi district will pay Rs 1,000 to each and every pupil. This is to avoid wasting the college from closure because of deficient admissions.

This is an initiative of headmaster Suresh Shetty, who will pay scholars' bond cash from his income. The faculty is in Konjady, 50km from Udupi town. "The school had many Kunbi community students when I took charge three years ago. There were 13 students in all, and the number kept dropping every year. To attract them, I introduced a Rs 1,000 bond to every student who takes admission (from the previous academic year). Now, the number has increased to 28," Shetty advised TOI. The faculty has classes 1 to five.

It was once the only training establishment in the space for long after it opened in 1959. Shetty stated children weren't turning up as a result of teachers were not common. "I made sure two teachers come to school every day. Parents were convinced about it," he stated.
