CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government will continue too search freedom for the seven other people convicted of killing former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in the Supreme Court in step with the policy determination taken by means of it, a top government functionary said on Thursday.
"We will put forth our arguments in the Supreme Court to free them and this is in line with the policy decision of the government," he instructed PTI on situation of anonymity when requested to comment on media reviews that the Centre has rejected Tamil Nadu's plea for their liberate.
According to information reviews, the Centre has instructed the Tamil Nadu government that it does no longer concur with the state's stand on freeing the convicts, who are in jail for the final 25 years, as it might set a bad precedent.
The convicts are: V Sriharan (alias Murugan), A G Perarivalan (alias Arivu), T Suthendraraja (alias Santhan), Jayakumar, Robert Payas, Ravichandran and Nalini.
Rajiv Gandhi used to be assassinated at an election rally at Sriperumbudur close to right here on May 21, 1991 by means of a girl suicide bomber. Altogether 15 other people were killed in the blast, together with Dhanu, the suicide bomber.
On January 23 this year, the Supreme Court had requested the Centre to take a decision within 3 months on a 2016 letter by means of Tamil Nadu government in the hunt for its approval for freeing them.
The Tamil Nadu government had written to the Centre on March 2, 2016, that it had determined to liberate the convicts and sought its concurrence.
