13 bridges submerge in Belagavi district

Belagavi: As many as 13 bridges in Chikkodi, Gokak, Raibag and Athani taluks of the district have submerged within the district. Six of them in Chikkodi taluk are underneath water for greater than a week following build up in water levels within the Krishna river and its tributaries Vedganga and Doodhganga due to incessant rainfall in Maharashtra and catchment spaces.
Bridges submerged bridges in Chikkodi taluk are Kallol-Yadur, Karadaga- Bhoj, Bhojwadi- Kunnur, Akkol-Sidnal, Bhivashi- Jatrat and Malikawad-Dattawad.

The Kudachi-Ugar bridge and Bhiradi Chichali bridges in Raibag taluk and Ugar (KH) and Ugar (BK) bridge in Athani taluk on river Krishna have additionally submerged. In Gokak taluk the Tigadolli- Nallanatti- Gudagatti- Vaderatti, Sunadholi- Mudalagi and Avaradi- Nandagaon bridges on the Ghataprabha river are underneath water.


Sources within the deputy commissioner’s place of business stated Maharashtra is liberating 1.eight lakh cusecs of water from the Rajapur barrage to river Krishna and Doodhganga and to control this influx, 1.85 lakh cusecs of water is being set free from the Hipparagi barrage to Alamatti Dam.


The taluk administrations involved had been asked to create awareness amongst villagers living on the river banks to be alert and be in a position to move to safer puts if required. In case of an emergency, the district administration is ready to carry out rehabilitation and rescue operations.


Thousands of acres of standing vegetation had been submerged due overflowing rivers. Krishna, Vedganga, Doodhganga, Markandeya, Hiranyakeshi, Ghataprabha, Malaprabha and Mahadayi rivers drift within the district. Agriculture officials say they are going to conduct a survey to evaluate crop harm after water levels recede.
