25-year-old held for killing tea vendor for Rs 500

LUDHIANA: Twenty-three days after a tea stall proprietor used to be found dead at his shop-cum-residence in Machhiwara, police on Sunday arrested a youth who allegedly killed him for Rs 500.
Yogi Sawhney, 55, a native of Boria in Bihar who ran a vend on Samrala Road, used to be found murdered on the roof of his rented lodging on June 22.

Khanna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dhruv Dahiya said it used to be found all through investigation that 25-year-old Dharminder Dass of Chugiyan village in Gadi Tarkhana, Ludhiana district, had dedicated the crime.

Dass, who belongs to Bihar and works as a labourer in Machhiwara, used to be arrested from Gari Bridge on Doraha-Machhiwara canal around 10pm on Sunday, said Machhiwara SHO Surinderpal Singh.

With his arrest, police have also recovered an iron rod used in the crime. The officer said the mobile phone of Sawhney that the accused had taken away had also been recovered.


Police said all through questioning, the accused said he used to visit Sawhney’s tea stall for smoking and they might even drink in combination. Dass had taken Rs 500 from him and once they met on the night of June 22, Sawhney demanded his a reimbursement. Dass, in a drunken state, picked up an iron rod, attacked Sawhney on his neck and fled after doing away with his mobile phone.


The Machhiwara SHO said police got essential clues from the decision detail information of Sawhney.


Sources said because the accused had taken away the mobile phone of Sawhney, police stored the number on tracker, and the instant he switched it on, his location used to be traced.
