Centre allows Assam to set up camp to detain non-nationals

GUWAHATI: The Centre has sanctioned building of a standalone detention camp, the first of its type in Assam, to keep folks declared non-nationals via more than a few foreigners’ tribunals within the state.


Principal secretary (home and political) LS Changsan advised TOI, “We have won the Centre’s go-ahead. We had sent a suggestion on this regard about two years in the past.”


The proposed detention centre will probably be constructed at Matia in Goalpara district, 146 km west of Guwahati. It will area about 3,000 folks and will probably be constructed at a price of Rs 46 crore.


At the moment, six jails — Goalpara, Kokrajhar, Tezpur, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Silchar — are used as camps to detain folks declared unlawful migrants via foreigners’ tribunals within the state, which is waiting for newsletter of the general draft of the up to date National Register of Citizens (NRC) on July 30.


Changsan stated, “The new camp will have amenities such as dwelling quarters for its inmates. Its capacity may also be larger later.” She made it clear that building of the proposed camp had nothing to do with the NRC as a result of it would area best the ones declared non-nationals via foreigners’ tribunals. Currently, the state has about 90,000 declared non-nationals.
