Farmer consumes poison near Vidhana Soudha

BENGALURU: Tension prevailed in entrance of Vidhana Soudha on Saturday morning when a 42-year-old farmer-cum small-time realtor attempted suicide by means of eating poison in complete public view.
The sufferer was identified as Gangadharaiah , a resident of M Jalahalli close to Gauribidanur the city in Chikkaballapura district. He alleged that a Bengaluru-based realtor cheated him of several lakhs of rupees, forcing him to take the extraordinary step.

Police said the incident happened close to Gate No. 2 of Vidhana Soudha round 11.30am. "He came in a car and started screaming that he was cheated by a realtor and consumed poison. He was rushed to nearby private hospital for treatment," a police officer said.


His wife Jayamma, who was contacted by means of police following the incident, said, "My husband played a middleman's role for Shivappa to purchase land in and around our village. He also helped Shivappa in getting loans when the latter was in financial trouble. My husband also sold his four-acre land to Shivappa in 2015, and the latter promised him he would pay the money later."


"Shivappa and his family members threatened us with a police case when my husband asked for the money. The harassment forced my husband to consume poison," she alleged.


Police said they are going to record Gangadharaiah's commentary on Sunday. "Based on it, we will take up a case if he alleges any harassment that led to the extreme step. We will also register a case against Gangadharaiah for the suicide bid," police said.


Authorities at Mallige health center, the place Gandadharaiah is admitted, said, "He was brought in with organophosphate poisoning, which is highly toxic. Initially, he was refusing to get treated and admitted. He will be under observation for 48-72 hours."
