NEW DELHI: Fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi has issued a observation through his lawyer claiming to have 'lawfully applied to be registered as a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda'. He has further said that his utility for Antigua's citizenship is motivated by 'trade passion in the Caribbean' and because he's 'in a state convalescence', following his treatment in the United States.
Choksi's observation comes simply two days after govt sources mentioned that he has moved to Antigua from the US and brought the passport of the Caribbean country.
In reaction to the diffusion notice issued by Interpol, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been informed by Antiguan authorities that Choksi arrived there this month and had taken the passport of that country, the sources had mentioned.
In the observation issued by Choksi, dated July 26, he has refuted, what he phrases, 'allegations made by Indian media and authorities'.
On Friday, TOI reported that the granting of citizenship to Choksi in Antigua has snowballed right into a political controversy with opposition parties there challenging solutions from Prime Minister Gaston Browne.
Data analysed by TOI finds that 28 Indians have applied for the Caribbean country's citizenship since 2014. Seven of them were granted the hassle-free Antiguan nationality between January 1 and June 30, 2017 itself, upon funding of $2,00,000, in keeping with the half-yearly record of Citizenship by Investment Unit (CIU), which comes under Antigua’s ministry of finance and company governance and public personal partnerships.
