NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday stated it used to be "frightening" that a lot of other people were demise in street accidents brought about via potholes and summoned Delhi's commissioner of police for non-removal of encroachments and traffic bottlenecks in spite of several recommendations.
A bench of justice Madan B Lokur and justice Deepak Gupta noticed that there are extra deaths due to potholes than terrorist attacks in India.
The bench stated the police commissioner should give an explanation for as to why the police has not carried out the February 2017 report of a different process power that had beneficial clearance of traffic bottlenecks and encroachments.
"So many people are dying in the country due to accident caused by potholes. Reports say that more people have died in accidents caused by potholes than in terrorist attacks," stated the bench.
The court docket asked a Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety to seem into the issue and provides its report in two weeks.
The bench, while hearing a question in relation to street protection around the country, stated the two-year time given via the Delhi executive for clearing bottlenecks used to be too long.
Advocate Wasim A Qadri, appearing for Delhi executive, instructed the bench that the time-line used to be drawn protecting in view construction of flyovers, underpasses and foot over-bridges.
"That means people of Delhi will have to face bottlenecks for another two-three years," the court docket remarked.
"For the sake of people of Delhi, let the Commissioner of Police come (before the bench)," stated the court docket even as the Delhi executive advocate pleaded against it.
"The problem in Delhi is that nobody is responsible here. Now you are saying that the Commissioner of Police is also not responsible. Tell us whom you want us to call. For the sake of people of Delhi, we are calling the Commissioner of Police," the bench stated.
The Delhi executive has filed an affidavit and mentioned that it had labored out an in depth roadmap to take away 77 "severe, moderate and mild bottlenecks" in two years and that an action plan involved each momentary and long-term measures.
