PATIALA: Balwant Singh Rajoana, the dying row convict in former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh’s assassination case, ended his hunger strike on Friday after getting assurance in writing from the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) president Gobind Singh Longowal relating to speeding up the clemency petition filed through him .
This used to be revealed through Rajoana’s sister Kamaldeep Kaur on Friday evening who came out of the Patiala Central Jail at the side of the letter after assembly Rajoana.
Notably, Rajoana had long gone on hunger strike on July 16 in opposition to the extend in determination through the Union home ministry on the mercy petition moved through SGPC in 2012. At the start of his hunger strike on Monday, Rajoana had turned down the request of SGPC individuals who had met him with a plea to end the strike. Rajoana then maintained that till the Union home ministry concluded the petition or the SGPC withdrew this mercy petition, he would stay on hunger strike.
Only a couple of hours sooner than Kamaldeep Kaur met his brother Balwant Singh Rajoana, the SGPC President at the side of any other individuals had held a meeting with the convict for round 30 mins within the jail and came out with assurance that Rajoana would end the hunger strike quickly.
After assembly Rajoana, the SGPC president stated that Rajoana used to be briefed about the assembly held through the SGPC and SAD (B) individuals with the Union home minister Rajnath Singh. Longowal added that Rajoana expressed his delight over their contemporary assembly with the home minister over clemency petition filed through SGPC in 2012.
“We briefed Rajoana about SGPC delegation's assembly with the home minister Rajnath Singh to whom we have now appealed to hurry up the verdict over the clemency petition filed through the SGPC in 2012. The home minister had confident us to do the same”, stated Longowal.
Patiala jail superintendent Rajan Kapoor stated, “The delegation of SGPC together with its president used to be allowed to fulfill Rajoana and the assembly came about for round thirty mins.” He added that the convict had ended his hunger strike.
Rajoana used to be sentenced through the CBI courtroom and his execution used to be time table for March 31, 2012 but on March 28, 2012 the SGCP filed a clemency plea without Rajoana's consent following which the home ministry had stayed the execution. He used to be sentenced for being a part of conspiracy wherein former CM Beant Singh and 16 others together with NSG commandos, drivers and body of workers at VIP portico have been killed in a suicide bomb assault. On August 31, 1995 the bomb used to be brought on through suicide bomber Dilawar Singh, whilst Rajoana, a constable then, used to be a again up human bomb to be used had Dilawar failed within the challenge.
