BENGALURU: Belakina Kannadi (Mirror of Light) tells the tale of a 12-year-old boy, who, inspired through social reform lessons in his faculty textbooks, goes in search of a groom for his younger widowed mom.
Directed through a Belagavi-based Kannada teacher, the movie has been chosen through the Barcelona Planet Film competition for screening.
“The boy is made up our minds to combat the discrimination faced through his widowed mom. He draws inspiration from the widow remarriage movement started through Raja Ram Mohan Roy. It provides him the braveness to problem societal norms,” says the 31-year-old director Umesh Virupakshappa Badiger.
“When his mom gadgets to remarriage, the boy goes on a protest, and in the end succeeds in convincing her,” says Badiger. A sum of Rs 40 lakh has been spent at the film so far and may be launched shortly.
North Karnataka artistes yet to get their due
Badiger, a local of Talluru village near Savdatti in Belagavi, works on the Kannada upper primary faculty in Markandeya Nagar.
Badiger has a master’s degree in Kannada literature from Mysore University and has been directing quick films. His previous work Koneya Puta (The Last Page) specializes in old-age properties and the plight of the aged. “Creative minds in North Karnataka are yet to get their due,” says Badiger. According to him, skill in northern districts are hardly ever spotted since they are clear of Bengaluru, the ability centre.
Badiger feels there is a tale behind each and every absent kid in schools. “No one can understand and explain that better than a teacher. Hence, I wrote a screenplay and with encouragement from like-minded pals, I may make it into a film,” he provides.
Badiger worked on Belakina Kannadi right through his summer holiday in 2017. “I did not want to sit idle right through holidays. Hence I worked at the film. The shooting used to be over in 20 days. Post-production and dubbing took some other 20 days,” he mentioned.
The two-hour-and-17-minute movie has been produced through Basavaraj Hammini and co-produced through Muragesh Shivapuji. The primary artistes are Puttaraju, Arati Kulkarni, Varun Katti, Mahadev Angadi and Basavaraj Tiralapu. Sunil Honnali used to be the cinematographer.
