Sports education in India is undergoing a welcome change, says Mary Kom

Indian boxer Mary Kom says the sports education in India is transforming and in the following few years world-class athletes will likely be produced in the country. The infrastructure has been evolved and more facilities are being supplied to budding sportspersons in various sports centres around the country and MHRD initiatives will assist the sports fraternity, says Mary.

"The government has introduced various initiatives, including Khelo India, to make people realise the importance of sports for holistic development of the students. Recently, the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education decided to host national-level sporting event every year in schools, to identify young talents," says Kom.

Kom used to be found in New Delhi on the sending off ceremony of a Unified Football female crew of 11 contributors, out of which six footballers have intellectual disability.


The female soccer crew will take part in Unified Cup Chicago, US, from July 17-20. The five day Unified Football Cup is a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Special Olympics. 24 groups (16 male and 8 female), together with India, Brazil, Canada, China, Ecuador, France, Germany, Italy, Japan (Nippon),Kenya, Korea, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, Slovakia, United Arab Emirates, United States and Uruguay, will likely be collaborating in the match.


Advising the parents to inspire their children to play other sports, Kom says, "Being a mother to three boys, I urge all the parents to inspire their kids and make sports an essential part of their life."


Five-time World Amateur Boxing Champion, Kom provides, "Special Olympics Unified Sports is a great initiative and it is amazing that the women from our country will be representing our nation at the Unified Cup 2018."
