Trichy: 2 tonne of waste removed from riverbed

TRICHY: With the water level within the Stanley Reservoir steadily marching against the 90-feet mark, which is the required level for the Tamil Nadu executive to open the sluice gates of Mettur dam, non-governmental organisations and citizen teams here introduced blank up drives on the Cauvery banks and the riverbed.

The voluntary initiative taken up with the fortify of Trichy Corporation on Saturday and Sunday saw the members and sanitary employees accumulating round two tonne of waste, most commonly clothes.

As the pilgrims visiting Sri Ranganathaswamy temple and Amma mandapam ghats have been leaving behind their clothes and prayer articles on the riverbed, citizen boards and NGOs introduced a few blank up drives.

“Most of the rubbish we collected from the riverbed had been deserted clothes and plastic covers. It is time the government devised a plan to prevent pilgrims from dumping material wastes on the Cauvery riverbed,” mentioned eNGO Thanneer secretary K C Neelamegam.
