Mysuru: This year, incidents of human-animal war will not be on a decrease scale, as there's abundant water in the wooded area. Waterholes and tanks in Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, which went dry due to serious drought up to now few years, have come alive due to continuous rainfall up to now few days. Foresters declare that each one tanks in the reserve are complete to the brim after many years.
Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, which adjoins Bandipur Tiger Reserve and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, has main water sources like Lakshmanathirtha, Sarati Hole, Nagarahole and a lot of streams and waterholes which quench the thirst of wild animals.

But due to drought in the region up to now few years, a majority of tanks had long gone dry, forcing wild animals, especially elephants, to stray into villages on the wooded area fringes. This had ended in human-animal war. Forest fires all the way through summer only added to the problem.


Forest authorities stated that rainfall up to now month had stuffed all 150 tanks and waterholes in the wooded area. “For the first time in numerous years, all water tanks in the wooded area have stuffed by way of end of June. We see rainfall from June to September in the wooded area, but due to cyclones, there was once good rainfall which introduced us nice relief because it averted wildfires and likewise stuffed up tanks,” foresters stated.


The wooded area department not too long ago constructed canals the use of earthmovers, to allow rainwater to drift into these tanks.


Nagarahole Tiger Reserve conservator of forests and director R Ravishankar stated there are 18 tanks that have been hooked up with solar powered pumps to pump water to tanks. As these tanks are complete, pumping of water has been stopped to avoid overflowing. Tank water will likely be to be had till December and can assist animals to quench their thirst,” the officer stated.
