KOCHI/THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: No pink alert used to be issued for any of Kerala's rain-ravaged 14 districts for the first time since August nine, elevating hopes that the lull in downpour since Friday would not turn out to be misleading, as help came pouring in from the Prime Minister in addition to a number of state governments. The IMD, however, has forecast heavy rains at a number of places in Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts.

The dying toll since August nine stands at 196 with 22 extra deaths reported on Saturday. Currently, 6,61,887 individuals are lodged in three,466 reduction camps.

The 22 deaths reported during the day were in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Idukki, Pathanamthitta and Chengannur districts. The worst affected places remained Aluva, Chalakudy, Chengannur, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta, the place large rescue operations persisted involving NDRF, army, navy and coast guard.

On Saturday, after surveying one of the most flood-affected spaces, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sanctioned Rs 500 crore as a right away reduction to the state. The Centre had introduced Rs 100-crore assistance on August 12 after Union home minister Rajnath Singh carried out an aerial survey of the flood state of affairs.

Governor P Sathasivam, leader minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union minister Okay J Alphons accompanied the PM during the aerial survey.

The CM, meanwhile, has quickly cancelled his US shuttle for clinical consultation. He used to be scheduled to fly on Sunday.

Battling heavy rains, which persisted to batter Alappuzha on Saturday, rescue teams evacuated thousands of people that were stranded in faraway corners of Chengannur and Kuttanad after the overflowing Vembanadu Lake and the Pampa River inundated huge stretches of spaces within the region. The region is facing a grave state of affairs as thousands extra remained marooned without meals, drinking water and medicines. Seven deaths were reported in Chengannur on Saturday. Meanwhile, the district management, at the behest of PWD minister G Sudhakaran, has arrested a houseboat owner, who refused to spare his boats for rescue operations. Sudhakaran stated the licences of boat drivers who refused to provide boats for rescue operations could be cancelled.
