Oil dealers say govt profiling them on caste, religious lines

BENGALURU: Petrol sellers in India are up in hands over the federal government and oil majors soliciting for sensitive personal data like caste, religion and constituency of the over 10 lakh workers at petrol pumps. They have said such "data mining by the government is unconstitutional and an extreme breach of privacy."

The Consortium of Indian Petroleum Dealers (CIPD) Punjab Petroleum Dealers Association and others are protesting over directives sent between June five and six, by way of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd.

On June 11, CIPD wrote a letter to the three firms pronouncing the initiative is a "violation of fundamental rights." The consortium has told the oil majors they're going to no longer be sharing this data as its impinges on their privateness. The issue was triggered this month when Bharat Petroleum allegedly stopped supplies to a couple sellers in Haryana as a result of non-submission of details.

The PSUs are said to have asked for 24 units of data. The 3 PSUs say the federal government needs this data for the Recognition of Prior Learning scheme beneath PM’s Skill Development Scheme, but CIPD isn't purchasing it.
