JAIPUR: The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has shot off a letter to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to deter states, specifically Rajasthan, from diluting the laws governing brief suspension of telecom services and products and issuing orders for shutdown of web and knowledge services and products.
In its letter dated August 8, the representative body for telecom service suppliers said that, as according to regulations, the route to suspend web services and products can also be given simplest by the house secretary, and in unavoidable cases, by officials no longer beneath the rank of joint secretary.
But the Rajasthan government has repeatedly watered down these provisions in 2017 by delegating the powers to divisional commissioners. Since February this yr, orders for web and knowledge blackout had been issued 53 occasions in Rajasthan.
The widespread “misuse” has caused grave hardship to the general public by depriving them of services and products like web banking, online educate and flight price tag reserving and safety and surveillance services and products.
The COAI said that in Rajasthan the shutdowns are ordered to conduct assessments, which don't warrant a public emergency or protection scenario.
