Woman hopes to pass X exam before turning 100

ALAPPUZHA: Karthiyayini Amma, a 96-year-old from Cheppad Haripad area, has handed her first-ever Aksharaleksham exam of Kerala State Literacy Mission, thus qualifying for attending the fourth usual. Her success has made her a star on social media in a single day.


She joined Aksharaleksham course of the literacy venture on January 26, 2018. The beneficiaries of the programme can study equivalency classes of the literacy venture for fourth usual, seventh usual, and 10th usual and better secondary and attend the examination.


There are 40,000 students within the direction and Karthiyayini Amma is the eldest among them.


According to Amma, her husband died 50 years in the past. Her daughter cleared her Class X-equivalent examination in 2016 on the age of 60. This inspired her, an illiterate, to enroll in the Aksharaleksham direction. “I may no longer move to university because of financial constraints. I worked as assist to take care of my youngsters. When my daughter handed 10th examination, I also sought after to do the similar. I can go 10th on the age of 100,” she mentioned.
