We played badly for just two minutes, got punished: Sreejesh

BHUBANESWAR: The Indian men's hockey team has been that specialize in overcoming the mistakes and weaknesses that led to the bronze medal in the recently-concluded Asian Games on the ongoing national camp right here, ahead of Asian Hockey Champions Trophy to be held in Muskat from October 18.

The Asian Champions Trophy will likely be a stepping stone to the Men's Hockey World Cup and the camp is helping them to acclimatize with the bottom and the place for the World Cup in November right here.

"With new targets and new atmosphere, the team is ready to move on. There is very little time for us after the Asian Games and the Asian Champions Trophy. The upcoming tournament is a chance for us to rectify the mistakes we did in the Asian Games. Of the seven matches we played in the Asiad we played badly for two minutes, but it has cost us a lot. But for those two minutes, we cannot take the whole tournament negatively," stated skipper PR Sreejesh.

The 25-member core workforce under the steering of chief trainer Harendra Singh began training in Bhubaneswar from September 16 and can continue till October 14.

"Asian Champions Trophy before the World Cup will help us to prepare for the Cup. The major mistake in Asian Games was we lost possession of the ball. Until we lose the ball, opponent cannot score goals. Besides, we also have to focus on timing and taking the right decision at the right moment. But players have to focus on possession," stated Singh.

He claimed India were enjoying very attacking hockey in the previous few tournaments and it is going to be the largest strength of the team.

"We are playing fast and furious hockey with which we want to put every team on the backfoot. We have increased penetration in the D drastically, but we are asking ourselves if that is enough," Singh remarked.

The trainer tasked his players to furnish him 5 instances of deficient performance throughout the continental multi-sporting tournament in Indonesia.

"It is important for every player to be accountable and also be able to criticise their own mistake. As a team activity, I have asked all players to mention five instances where they thought their own individual performance was poor during the Asian Games," Harendra stated.
