NEW DELHI: In one of his sharpest assaults but on Narendra Modi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh mentioned his successor's rule has not been excellent for India as he "failed" the citizens and led a government that was once "mostly silent" on incidents of communal violence, mob lynching and cow vigilantism.
Manmohan Singh, whilst talking on the launch of Congress chief Shashi Tharoor's new ebook, alleged that beneath the present dispensation the surroundings in universities and national institutions like the CBI was once being vitiated and dissent stifled.
His remarks got here amid the current crisis within the CBI, whose best two bosses have been divested of their powers and despatched on depart by the federal government.
In a scathing criticism of Modi, Manmohan Singh mentioned he was once elected as the 14th Prime Minister of India on the back of many lofty promises, but previously 4 years, he and his government "failed" their citizens and eroded the electorate' religion.

"He (Modi) has spoken of being a prime minister for all Indians however the government he presides over has been most commonly silent within the face of widespread communal violence, mob lynching and cow vigilantism.
"At the same time, academic freedoms are being sought to be curbed. The setting in our universities and national institutions like the CBI is being vitiated and dissent stifled," Singh alleged.
His criticism of the federal government's economic insurance policies was once much more critical as the former top minister mentioned nothing concrete were completed to carry back the "promised billions of dollars" allegedly held in another country as black money.
The "hastily-implemented" demonetisation and GST have proved to be "disastrous" for the economic system, Singh mentioned.
Petrol and diesel prices are at a "historical top" despite the fall in international crude oil prices because the Modi government chose to levy excessive excise duties instead of passing the benefits of low prices to the people of India, he said, adding that Modi, instead, has thought it fit to "punish our other people".
Manmohan Singh also alleged that Modi presides over a "frightened population, an economic system that has been set back by foolhardy tasks, painful loss of jobs, the growing distress among India's farming communities, a devastating selection of farmer suicides, insecure borders, instability in Kashmir, and the palpable failure in implementation of even laudable tasks like Swachch Bharat, Skill Development, Make in India and Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao".
"This is what he presides over, and not a mundane, plural, loose and equivalent society that was once... envisioned and in-built its six and a part a long time as a loose nation," he added.
Modi's rule has "not been excellent" for India and all of it arises from the Modi paradox that Tharoor has shown in his ebook, he mentioned.
"Much of what the Modi government is all about has became out to be little greater than a series of empty gestures...with little or no substance having been accomplished on the flooring," he mentioned.
