WASHINGTON: Pakistan might be held responsible if they don't make trustworthy efforts to curb terrorism on their western border with Afghanistan, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has stated.
Talking to reporters Tuesday at the State Department's Foggy Bottom headquarters, Pompeo stated this used to be the message he had delivered to the Pakistani leadership when he travelled to Islamabad in September, after Imran Khan changed into high minister.
"We had made clear that the US policy with respect to south-central Asia has not changed, that our expectation is that Pakistan will not provide safe harbor to terrorists on their western border," he stated in accordance with a question on AfPak.
On September five, Pompeo met Khan and pressed him "to do more" to rein in the terror groups running from Pakistan's soil.
"We could not make that message any more clear and that Pakistan might be held account if they don't see about it... If they're no longer trustworthy in that effort.
"We don't consider we will get to where that everybody needs. Everyone needs reconciliation in Afghanistan, and to achieve that you'll be able to't have a safe harbor for Taliban - for Haqqani, and for others inside Pakistan," Pompeo stated.
The Pakistani government is aware of that "that is our overview and this management has already made vital efforts to hold them responsible and we are hoping that they'll achieve the objective that we have out for them", stated the Secretary of State.
He indicated that there was no change in the Trump management's policy with reference to suspension of safety support to Pakistan until it takes sufficient measures to eliminate safe terrorist safe havens.
Early this 12 months, US President Donald Trump had suspended USD 300 million in safety support to Pakistan. India, too, had requested Pakistan to prevent supporting and glorifying terrorists and terror activities in opposition to India and its other neighbours.
