COIMBATORE: Students and professors from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University visited sugarcane fields in Erode district to discover a answer for wooly aphids, insects that suck plant fluids and injury the leaves of the crops. Two professors and 25 students from the dep. of agricultural entomology visited the sugarcane box of farmer Chinnasamy at Kumilamparappu in Chithode to investigate cross-check and recommend methods for the management of wooly aphids.
"We found two predators of the pest - brown lacewings (Micromus igorotus) and pyralid larvae (Dipha aphidivora) in the colony of wooly aphid to the tune of two to four per leaf. As these predators can control the wooly aphids within 30-60 days, conservation of natural enemies by not resorting to spraying of insecticides was recommended," stated a professor.
The college requested the farmers to look for herbal enemies once they observe the wooly aphids in sugarcane fields.
