Vadodara: The witch-hunt continues within the tribal belt of central Gujarat. While it had seemed because the closing couple of years that incidents of ladies being branded as witches had gone down, two incidents in Dahod and Chhota Udepur appear to disprove the realization.
In Chhota Udepur district, a woman used to be beheaded on Monday while two girls have been tortured after being tied to a tree and crushed up in Dahod district closing week. Tribal researcher and activist Kanjibhai Patel said that while the ladies may be blamed for diseases, deaths of any unfortunate incident, the actual reason why at times have been different. “This is frequently performed when there are disputes of belongings, family feuds, competition throughout the village or even to take advantage of girls. The tales labelling the ladies as witches are frequently cooked up,” said Patel.
Patel, on the other hand, said that the apply used to be no longer unique to tribals. “It is often observed around the rural spaces and even in some parts of towns. Women are the most important sufferers of this practice,” he said.
Dr Sujat Vali of the Humanist Rationalist Association in Godhra said that it used to be only girls from poor households who suffered. “The girls of well-to-do households are by no means focused by means of the ‘badvas’ or ‘bhuvas’ who declare girls witches,” Vali said.
Vali said that a number of makes an attempt had been made to create awareness on the factor, but the apply still prevails. “The police too must take stricter action in such instances,” he said.
Patel said that the ‘badvas’ and ‘bhuvas’ have been like establishments in themselves. He said that they even influence the voting of the area through which they dangle sway.
“Whenever any individual approaches them, they repair a date to find a solution. On at the present time, they act frenzied and provides the identify of a woman. The message soon spreads within the village and the ladies is focused,” he said.
