Fishing banned in Singanallur lake to preserve biodiversity

Coimbatore: Commercial fishing might be banned in Singanallur lake from January 1 to preserve biodiversity, municipal administration minister SP Velumani stated here on Sunday.
“All the 19 lakes within the district have been leased out to hold out business fishing. But overfishing has affected Singanllur lake,” the minister stated whilst speaking at an tournament organised by way of the Centre for Urban Biodiversity Conservation and Education (Cube) at the side of town corporation to rejoice the first anniversary of the declaration of Singanallur lake as an city biodiversity conservation zone.

“As most of the local freshwater fish species are going through extinction, actions to preserve them and to create awareness about them might be performed. Research can be inspired. I hope the lake will look like Vedanthangal hen sanctuary inside of some years,” the minister stated, after inaugurating the freshwater fish conservation mission. “The lake is also being developed underneath the good town project,” he added.

Velumani launched local shrimps and two species of local fish within the lake.


More local varieties might be launched right through the breeding season, a Cube co-ordinator stated. “We will reintroduce the fish species that have been not unusual here 30 years in the past. It will take 5 to 6 years to peer the consequences. Some scientists are assisting us within the paintings.”


The lease period for the fisherman, who were sporting out business fishing in Singanallur lake, ends on December 31 and the fisheries division won't renew the contract, a senior corporation reliable stated.
