BERHAMPUR: Panic gripped Chilika following the mass dying of crows at Sialia and Alada Patna villages close to Krushna Prasad under Nuapada range of the Chilika natural world division on Saturday.
Wildlife personnel discovered the carcasses of 20 crows from Sialia and 11 from Alada Patna.
"The exact reason of the sudden death of crows in such large numbers is yet to be known. It can be ascertained only after a postmortem," Gangadhara Sahu, an officer of the Nuapada natural world range, said. He added that doctors inspecting the circumstances resulting in the dying of the crows have taken two samples of the carcasses from Sialia. They have been set on fire after a thorough exam.
The natural world division is making plans to ship the samples to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal to substantiate the virus of avian influenza within the crows. Sahu added that they would decide the future plan of action after getting the initial report from the local veterinary sanatorium. The range officer, then again, said they didn't to find any migratory fowl there useless "So far, we have not found any migratory bird in the Nuapada range area of the lake dead," he said.
The lake has seen the arrival of round six lakh winged visitors this yr. Wildlife officials said they're conserving a strict vigil on the lake following the restoration of carcasses of crows.
The birds, most commonly from beyond the Himalayas in northern Eurasia, the Caspian area, Siberia, Kazakh, Lake Baikal and the far off areas of Russia and neighbouring nations discuss with Chilika each and every winter and get started their homeward adventure before the onset of summer season.
