MUMBAI: A new child's frame was once fished out of a squat toilet in a Virar clinic on Thursday afternoon after dismantling it. A 17-year-old rape survivor is thought to have delivered the premature baby while answering nature's call and fled in panic.
The Virar police will carry out a DNA check to establish if the survivor, who was once seven months pregnant, gave birth to the infant boy weighing 1.five kg.
Around 9am on Thursday, when sanitary workers came to clean the two bathrooms in the women ward of the clinic outdoor Virar station, they discovered one blocked. On inspection, they noticed a head in the toilet bowl. Hospital government informed the police, who arrived and attempted to fish out the frame. When their efforts failed, they informed the fire brigade around 2.30pm.
Fireman Vishal Shirke instructed TOI that the frame was once caught in the toilet chamber of the Indian-style loo. They had to wreck the squatting pan and the tiles around it to succeed in the drain pipe. The frame, together with the umbilical twine and placenta, was once removed and passed over to the clinic government.
Hospital medical officer Dr Vipin Jain instructed TOI that the infant may have been born in the wee hours as it had now not decomposed. The closed circuit tv (CCTV) of the 30-bedded clinic shows the minor in the clinic at around 4am. She had come complaining of critical belly ache. She was once attended to and allowed to move. Nurses in the clinic instructed the police that she was once noticed visiting the toilet and left about 10 minutes later.
The police said the 17-year-old has confessed to delivering the infant in the toilet. She said she was once relieving herself and did not realise when the infant slipped out. She panicked and instructed her mother, who was once ready outdoor. They made up our minds to desert the infant and left.
Child specialist Dr Hemant Joshi instructed TOI that it's tricky to establish if the infant was once born and deserted or it slipped out by chance. "If the mother had raised an alarm, the baby could have been saved despite falling into the bowl," said Joshi.
Virar senior inspector Ghanshyam Adhav said a rape case was once filed about two months ago when the girl's oldsters learnt about her pregnancy. The woman, who does menial jobs in the locality, had befriended a person, but when she were given pregnant, he deserted her. The accused, who's absconding, has been booked underneath Pocso, said Adhav.
