Trichy: Hosp contract workers protest over salary

TRICHY: Around 80 contract employees in Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) right here staged a protest on Thursday alleging that they had been yet to be paid their November month’s salary. The protesters also demanded a hike in their salary.
The protest -- organised by way of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) -- began at the health center premises round 10am.

Those who protested integrated electricians, plumbers, lab technicians and others who had been working on a freelance foundation in the health center.


“Citing problems with contract renewal, November month’s salary is yet to be paid to contract employees. This is the first time that there was any such prolong in paying salary. Thus, the livelihood of the contract employees has been affected,” mentioned CITU district secretary Maran, who participated in the protest.


They also demanded that the minimal wages as prescribed by way of district collector Ok Rajamani be applied for them. “Currently, we’re being paid round Rs five,500 to Rs 6,000. It will have to be higher to round Rs 10,000,” a protester mentioned.
