MUMBAI: The incapacity of the Shiv Sena-backed union to partly restore BEST products and services regardless of its claims of having the fortify of 11,000 of the 40,000 workers has raised questions about its waning clout.
The BEST Kamgar Sena had promised to carry a minimum of 500 of the BEST’s 3,000-odd fleet again at the roads after it withdrew fortify to the strike. However, simply 11 buses operated on Wednesday and now not a single one hit the roads on Thursday.
Several BEST workers advised TOI the Sena union appeared to have “lost its sheen”. “It has been obvious all over this strike the Sena union leaders did not get the fortify of most workers, particularly from their own union. There is a lot of discontent as workers are at the streets to struggle peacefully for his or her rights and many don’t need to surrender so easily,” mentioned Santosh Kute who was once part of the protest outside Mulund bus depot.
Another BEST employee mentioned there have been experiences of some Sena members wanting to change to other unions. A senior Sena functionary denied this. “These rumours are being spread via our competitors,” he mentioned.
Suhas Samant of the BEST Kamgar Sena mentioned he was once the first one to be referred to as for talks via common supervisor Surendrakumar Bagde. “We have taken the right plan of action. The control wasn’t calling union leaders for talks as there was once an commercial courtroom order restraining workers from going on strike. After we withdrew our fortify, we have been referred to as legally for negotiations,” he mentioned, adding he tried his highest to restore products and services. Sources mentioned some workers feared assaults and subsequently stayed away.
Shashank Rao of BEST Workers’ Union mentioned, “Why did Sena leaders go away the agitation and join arms with the control? They did not even get a written assurance from BEST administration on any calls for. It was once now not a just right determination to again out early. This will lead to large-scale migration to our union,” he mentioned.
